The Reign of Shadow
The clan moved northward to Mount Ulvakas where they established the foothold of their mining colony. The clan was small and had little supplies, so they cultivated a collection of orc tribes as slave labor in mining and construction. Eventually the orc tribes grew unruly and staged an uprising when a large group of forest orcs moved in from the north. Though the Duergar kept their casualties to a minimum, they lost large quantities of weapons and livestock to the orc rebellion. The orc rebellion marked the beginning of the transition to a necromancy powered economy, as the Duergar Warlock thanes raised hordes of slain orcs to work the mines. After a period of extreme isolationism, in which they hid their presence, a report by Anthrologist Kalyps proposed a new strategy for utilizing the orcs of Gharj and established the clanhold as patron of the tribes.
